An independent production company is looking for someone to help produce an hour-long commissioned BBC Radio 4 documentary about Lou Reed. The doc is due in March, but there are also other similar projects in the pipeline, so this can be a long-term gig.
This is a NYC-based position and responsibilities include historical and biographical research, setting up and conducting interviews, and mixing audio.
This is a great fit for someone early in their career t looking for good production credits in longform audio. It helps if you like music and are interested in its history.
Qualifications:
– Based in NYC
– Knowledge of audio editing software, preferably Pro Tools
– Has a kit for recording interviews
– Experience in narrative or documentary audio
Details:
– Payment: starts at $15/hour with a potential increase soon after. You would be an independent contractor and paid on a consulting basis.
– Time commitment: variable but averages something like 4-5 hours/week–more when deadlines loom.
– The recording and mixing is done in an assisting capacity to the main producer. So there have been a few interviews so far, and Eduard have been there holding the mic while the producer led the questioning and I was able to contribute questions here and there. Then he helped with Trinting.
– The biographical research Eduard mentioned consisted mostly of reading a book or two and taking notes, it has not been intense archival/library type research.
– The job is definitely an early career job with an emphasis on mentorship. He took it between two pub radio internships, soon after graduating college. People who are still in college would be totally fine candidates too.
– If it is a good fit, the pay can go up.
So while the pay does not compare very well to temp work at WNYC and the like, it does compare well to internships available in NYC. Again from experience, the workload and level of skill involved has been similar to public radio internships Eduard has done (research a person, book a guest, transcribe a tape, read a book), and the pay has been better than any of his internships and it has been a good learning experience.
If you’re interested, send Eduard your resume and a few lines about why you’re interested (eduardsaakashvili@gmail.com).
Also contact Eduard with any questions, he has been doing the job and is helping hire his replacement. This is a varied, exciting job and you will likely meet some inspiring and semi-famous people while learning a lot about how to put together an audio documentary.
