Today I read a discussion about an article in the Economist on how loneliness is becoming a serious public health concern.
It reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend who said: “podcasts are a great cure for loneliness”.
I’m sure we can agree with this statement. Podcasting is arguably the most intimate form of media consumption. By listening to a show, it can feel as though you have someone helping and guiding you. Or a voice to accompany you when you might go through a whole day without interacting with anyone.
There was one particular quote I came across in the discussion on the article that also struck a chord with me:
We need deeper, local, and more meaningful social interactions, and less shallow, global, low quality connections. https://t.co/kJfqXjj0V5 pic.twitter.com/nmsUo1bzs8

This sentiment ties in with why I started this newsletter.
On the one hand, podcasting allows us to form closer connections at a distance as well as provides opportunities to work remotely for those within the industry.
But at the same time, I find that there’s often a piece of the puzzle missing in the space: the human need for deeper connections – in real life and on a local level.
My hope is that this project will support you in creating closer relationships with other members of the podcasting community in New York as well as making it more accessible to any newcomers to the city or industry.
This means sharing podcast related events, updates and career opportunities from all of the city’s activity instead of only one area.
We’re also planning a launch party ๐ where you’ll be able to meet other subscribers and many of those mentioned in the newsletter – stay tuned for further announcements in the coming weeks!
